The implementation of Environmental Management Systems, recognized by norm ISO 14001, is becoming a common practice among Golf Courses in Portugal, where rationalization of water consumption is one of the main concerns and has led to the development and installation of efficient, computer controlled irrigation systems, rain and humidity sensors, grass quality being guaranteed by cultural practices such as aerification, top dressing, use of cultural, genetic and/ or biological means of fighting turf enemies, which, by reducing chemical use also increase environmental sustainability. These measures have been recognized at international level by numerous international awards:
